Ram Nath Kovind

In a bid to improve relations with India, Myanmar will now provide visa on arrival to Indians. Indian President Ram Nath Kovind made a 5-day visit to Myanmar this month. The visit will continue India’s engagement under the ‘Neighborhood First Policy’ and the ‘Act East Policy’.

Myanmar’s announcement coincided with the President’s visit. The country will now provide visa on arrival to Indian tourists at the Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, and Mandalay airports. The news was tweeted by the Office of the President of India.

Residents of India’s North East have particularly welcomed this move. They would now be able to avail the benefits of the recently concluded Land-Border Crossing Agreement.

The Land-Border Crossing Agreement was signed between Indian and Myanmar on the 11th of May 2018. It was brought into effect this August with the opening of two international entry-exit points:

  1. Tamu-Moreh border
  2. Rihkhawdar-Zowkhawtar border

President Kovind also said that both the nations are looking forward to concluding the Motor Vehicles Agreement.

Many other agreements are expected to be signed during the President’s visit to the country. This is following Myanmar’s recently signed big port deal with China.

Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, visited Myanmar last year, as per The Times of India. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi visited India in January this year for the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit. She is the State Counsellor of Myanmar.
